Your walls are not the walls in the instruction booklet

Mount manufacturers write instructions for wood-framed houses. They assume you will find two studs sixteen inches apart, drive four lag screws, and be done in twenty minutes. That is a fine assumption in Ohio. It is wrong in most of Palm Beach County.

The dominant housing type here is concrete block and stucco. Block walls form the exterior shell, with stucco outside and often a thin furring layer and drywall inside. That means the living room wall you want the TV on, if it faces the street or the patio, is masonry with a decorative skin over it. The drill goes an inch and a half and hits something that does not care about a wood screw.

Interior partition walls are usually built differently: wood or light metal framing with drywall, exactly like anywhere else. So a single house routinely has both wall types, and the correct method changes depending on which side of the room you point at.

Condominium units add a third case. In the 1970s and 1980s buildings that make up so much of the Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach condo belt, the wall between units is often solid block or poured concrete, while the walls inside the unit are frame. Some associations also restrict penetrations of party walls, which is a rule question, not a tool question, and it is worth a call to the manager before anybody drills.

How to tell block from frame in thirty seconds

Knock on it. A frame wall sounds hollow and the tone changes as you move across it, going solid every sixteen inches where a stud is. A block wall sounds dead and identical everywhere. Once you have heard both you will not confuse them again.

Feel it. Block walls run noticeably cooler than frame walls, especially on a shaded elevation, and in a humid house they can feel faintly damp to the palm.

Use the geometry. If the wall you are looking at is the outside of the house on a single-story home, treat it as block until proven otherwise. If it separates two rooms inside the unit, treat it as frame. Look at how deep the window returns are: block walls give you a deep sill and a chunky reveal, frame walls give you a shallow one.

Then verify. A stud finder reading solid across an entire wall usually means block, not a miraculous run of studs. A small test hole in a spot the mount plate will cover tells you everything: dust color and drill resistance are unambiguous. Gray grit and hard going means masonry. White dust and easy going means drywall over frame.

Anchoring into concrete block

The tool is a hammer drill with a masonry bit, not a standard drill with a wood bit. A regular drill will polish a hole into block and burn the bit doing it.

The fastener most commonly used for this is a concrete screw of the Tapcon type: a hardened screw driven into a precisely sized pilot hole, cutting its own threads in the masonry. Sizing matters more than people think. The pilot hole diameter is specified by the screw manufacturer, and drilling a sixteenth over means the screw spins and holds nothing. Depth matters too: drill deeper than the embedment you need so dust has somewhere to go, and blow or vacuum the hole out before driving. Dust left in the hole is the single most common reason a concrete screw fails to hold.

Now the part specific to block. Concrete masonry units are hollow. A standard block has two or three voids separated by solid sections called webs, and a mortar bed between courses. An anchor that lands in a web is in solid material and will hold enormous load. An anchor that lands in a cavity is in air behind a face shell that may be barely an inch thick, and it will pull straight out under a cantilevered TV arm.

There are two responses. Move the hole to a web, which is why a mount that can shift an inch or two laterally is worth having, or use hardware rated for hollow masonry, such as a sleeve anchor or a toggle designed for block, sized so it grips behind the face shell. Avoid setting anchors into the mortar joint itself where you can; the joint is softer than the block and gives you less to hold onto. And avoid the plastic expansion plugs that come in the mount box entirely, which are not a serious fastener for a hanging television.

One more South Florida note: on a coastal property, stainless or properly coated fasteners are worth the difference. Salt air reaches surprisingly far inland here, and a plated screw sunk into a damp block wall on the barrier island will not look the same in five years.

Anchoring into an interior frame wall

Find the framing, then confirm it. A stud finder gives you a candidate, and a small pilot hole in the plate footprint confirms it. Mark both edges of the member and go for the middle, because catching the edge of a stud gives you a fastener with half its thread in drywall.

Metal framing is common in Florida interior partitions, including in a lot of the county's condominium stock, and it changes the hardware. A lag screw into a light metal stud is not the same connection as a lag into a two-by-four. Metal framing calls for fasteners made for it, and for a heavy articulating arm it may call for spanning to a backing board fixed across several studs.

Understand the leverage. A fixed low-profile mount puts load almost straight down the wall. An articulating arm extended eighteen inches turns the weight of the TV into a pull-out force at the top fasteners that is a multiple of the TV weight.This is why a mount that is fine flush against the wall fails once someone swings the screen toward the kitchen.

Drywall anchors alone do not hold a television. There are toggle products marketed for it, and for a small screen on a fixed mount in a low-traffic room some of them are fine, but for anything sizeable, and for anything on an arm, the answer is framing members or masonry.

Over the fireplace, and other awkward locations

Over a fireplace is the most requested awkward mount and the one worth the most thought. Two issues. The first is heat: rising warm air collects in the recess above a firebox, and manufacturers publish maximum operating temperatures for a reason. A mantel that projects outward helps by pushing the heat plume away from the screen. No mantel and a shallow recess is the worst case.

The second is geometry. A TV over a mantel typically sits well above seated eye level, which means you are looking up at it for hours. A pull-down or tilting mount solves it mechanically but adds load and cost, and it means the arm has to hold in whatever the chimney chase is built from, which around here is often block or a framed chase over block.

Other awkward cases in this market: patio and lanai mounts, where the screen must be rated for outdoor use and the mount and fasteners must be corrosion resistant; corner mounts on a full-motion arm, where extension is at its maximum and the anchoring has to be at its best; and older condominium units where the only wall with a good sight line is the demising wall the association would rather you did not drill.

Cable concealment, honestly

This is where a lot of installers overpromise, so here is the straight version. There are two different cables behind a television and they are not governed the same way.

The signal side, meaning the HDMI and any network cable, is low voltage. Where the wall is a frame partition with a cavity, that cable can generally be routed inside the wall between the two locations and come out at a low plate behind your components. Where the wall is block, there is usually no continuous cavity to route through at all, and cutting a channel into masonry to bury a cable is not a small job. In block, the honest answer is often that the cable runs on the surface.

The power side is different. Bringing power up inside a wall to a new point behind a television is wiring work. Those recessed in-wall power kits sold alongside mounts are wiring work too. That is one of the licensed trades we refer out, and we do not do it.
